Chennai turns out to be a genuinely good base for this kind of trip. Some of South India's oldest temple towns and a couple of its better coastlines are all within a tank of petrol. None of what follows needs more than a full day if you're willing to leave early, and the first two barely need that much.
1. Mahabalipuram — around 74 km, roughly 2 hours
The closest of the five, and genuinely an easy half-day trip down the East Coast Road. The Shore Temple and the rock-cut Pancha Rathas are both UNESCO World Heritage sites, and the drive itself — ECR hugging the coast most of the way — is reason enough to go even before you factor in the temples.
2. Kanchipuram — around 75 km, roughly 2 hours
One of Tamil Nadu's oldest temple towns, best known for the Kamakshi Amman and Ekambareswarar temples, and for the silk it's been weaving for centuries. Easy as a day trip — you can see two or three temples and still be home for dinner.
3. Vellore — around 138 km, roughly 3 hours
Vellore Fort, and the Jalakandeswarar Temple inside its walls, are the draw here. It's far enough out that we'd call this a full-day trip rather than a quick half-day run — not undoable as an add-on to Kanchipuram, but plan for the extra hour on the road.
4. Tirupati — around 135–150 km, roughly 3–4 hours
The most-booked outstation route in our fleet, by a wide margin. The Sri Venkateswara Temple is one of the most-visited pilgrimage sites anywhere in the world, which means it's worth booking your car ahead and starting early — most of our Tirupati trips leave Chennai by 5 or 6 AM, mainly to beat the temple queues rather than the traffic. An Innova covers this comfortably; if you're going as a bigger group or want the extra comfort for the drive back, the Innova Crysta is worth the upgrade.
5. Pondicherry — around 150 km, roughly 3–4 hours
The one that doesn't fit the temple-town pattern. Less about a single site, more about the French Quarter's cafes and the beach promenade in the evening. The ECR drive down is scenic enough to be part of the trip rather than just the way there, and most people treat it as an overnight rather than a same-day return.
